The Kent Island Yacht Club Outrigger Team held its first annual Outrigger
Regatta over the recent Labor Day weekend. Titled the Kent Island Cup -
Maryland Outrigger Challenge and held in the Kent Narrows area of Maryland's
Eastern Shore, this ECORA (East Coast Outrigger Racing Association) event
consisted of 9 sprint races (1 mile each) on Saturday and two (men's and
women's) Ironman races (12 miles) on Sunday. A total of four clubs (Manu'iwa
Canoe Club of New York, Philadelphia Outrigger Canoe Club, Washington DC Canoe
Club, and Kent Island Yacht Club Outrigger Team) participated, with the
Washington DC Canoe Club finishing as the overall Regatta winner.
The women's
Ironman race was won by a crew from the Washington DC Canoe Club in an initial
women's course record of 2:03:10, while second place went to another DC Canoe
Club crew and third place was taken by the Kent Island Women's crew.
The
men's Ironman race saw a first-place finish by a Manu'iwa crew (steered by
ECORA President Blake Conant) in an initial men's course record of 1:38:55.
Philadelphia took second place, a second Manu'iwa crew took third place,
Washington DC took fourth, and Kent Island took fifth.
Plans are already
beginning to make this an annual ECORA event, featuring sprints, long-distance
races, Eastern Shore food, paddler hospitality and camaraderie.
