From: Roger Meyer via outrigger@europa.com
Four years ago outrigging was virtually unkown on the East Coast. Last year
14 teams raced around the Statue of Liberty attracting nationwide coverage
from CNN and Associated Press. For our second year Liberty World Challenge
will host as many as 40 teams, with competition coming as far as Hawai`i. In
addition, "Team Hawaii" will graciously host an Outrigging Symposium for the
public, clubs and members of the media. With this remarkable nationwide
participation and support, Liberty World Challenge is fast becoming a
phenomenal sports event and singular tradition for New York City.
If you are not familiar with the venue, Liberty World Challenge is urban
outrigging. It is paddling around the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island, in
the shadow of the World Trade Center, under the Brooklyn Bridge, and surfing
the wakes of oceanliners and ferries listing with cheering spectators. It's
as bizarre as it sounds as well as fun and challenging. Needless to say we
will pump-up the publicity and coverage, to bring the sport of outrigging even
more visibilty than last year. We thank you all in advance for your interest
and participation. See you downtown!

Roger Meyer
