SKIING IN THE TROPICS
Hawaiian Style

Exploring The Summit

We explore the summit observatory areas a bit.... while getting used to the cold - it's about 30 degF, at this point, with a 20+ knot wind - and brudda, you haven't felt cold till you lived in Hawai`i and visit the Top Of The Pacific! DAMN! I didn't know it could get this cold in the tropics

We climb into the boots, hop on the sticks and shove off - after getting Mutha to calm down and agree to driving down to pick us up at the bottom of the run - who by this time is wound up tight by the lack of air and thoughts of driving by herself down that windy, steep road.....

I step off first and carve (yes carve - it was hard as a rock) my first turns on tropical snow - WHAT A RUSH!!.... well....it wasn't exactly snow by this time - 4 days after the storm - it was more like what east coast skiing is famous for - frozen, wind-blasted boiler plate...

- but with that tropical sun glaring down on it, the surface softened up a bit and toward the end of the day got quite skiable...... As Harv will gladly attest, it was worth the trip from Vancouver and braving the cold for!

After six or seven runs of about 1500 Vft and 2500' in length, we were pretty much spent.......

Yerz truly here, flashing a gloved "shaka" - and trying to smile, with teeth clenched - thinking about them Heinies
INSIDE the Jeep.......
