THE SNAP: 1991

During the Marui Pipeline Masters, Tom Carroll surfed like a man possessed, throwing under-the-lip turns where angels fear to tread. While every other competitor strained just to make the waves, Carroll wound up his muscular little body and threw a giant gouge right into the eye of the Pipe. "The Snap," as this single turn came to be called, was like a bolt of lightning on a clear day. In the final of the same event, Carroll spun around beneath Derek Ho, pulled one of the latest drops in Pipeline history, and scored a perfect 10--his first of two such scores in the same heat. Needless to say, he won the Pipe Masters and his first Triple Crown. Photo: Jeff Divine.
