Event: The Quiksilver Roxy Pro women's competition. Sanctioned by the Association of Surfing Professionals.
The Quiksilver Roxy Pro women's contest features a 4-star World Qualifying Series contest leading into the final World Championship Tour event, the finale of the Kahlua women's events on the Coca Cola/ASP World Tour. New: The inaugural women's Triple Crown of Surfing Championship will be introduced this year, with a $7,500 winner-take-all-purse presented by Kahlua. Where: The venue for the women's contest is Sunset Beach in conjunction with the men's World Cup of Surfing. When: Women's holding period November 24 to December 6, 1997. Competition is held on the two days the surf is best within the 10-day waiting period as determined by the contest director. For announcements about contest progress and wave conditions listen to Surf News Network at 596-7873 or check the sports section in the daily newspapers. Defending Champion: Layne Beachley, Australia Prize Money: WQS: $12,500. WCT: $25,000. Surfers: The WQS is limited to 24 surfers. The highest ranked WQS finisher not already in the top 11, will be a wild card in the women's WCT. The WCT features 12 women qualifying to join the top 11 seeded ASP women in the women's final rounds. Awards: An awards ceremony will be held on-stage at Sunset Beach immediately following the finals. A press conference will be held on site immediately following the awards. Press Facility: The press facility will be open at Sunset Beach on surfing days, in the same location as the World Cup of Surfing, from 8:00 a.m. to the end of each day's competition.
