HOLDING PERIODS
Because the Rip Curl World Cup of Surfing presented by Zeal Optics is a big wave event, the contest is scheduled within an 11-day "Holding Period," with Thanksgiving Holiday off. Contest Director Bernie Baker makes the final determination whether or not a contest will take place on any given day. If the contest is on, it will begin at 8:00 a.m. and run until 4:00 p.m. There are several ways to determine if surfing is taking place: You can call the Press trailer hotline - 808-638-5024 for recorded contest information or you can call the Surf News Network, 596-SURF (7873).

HEATS & TIMING
A total of 132 surfers appear in the contest Trials heats consist of 72 surfers in 12, six-man heats 36 surfers advance to meet the 28 seeded surfers in Main Event - Round 1 The 32 surfers finishing 1st and 2nd advance to Main Event - Round 2 The 16 surfers finishing 1st and 2nd advance to the Quarter Finals Semi-Finals and Final event follow Each heat is 30 minutes unless lengthened by contest director due to hazardous conditions.

Five-minute visual and verbal warning prior to commencement of next heat One horn blast to start - Two horn blasts to Finish
