WHAT: - The 19th annual 41-mile, women's Molokai`-to-O`ahu world championship long-distance outrigger canoe race.
WHEN: Sunday, September 28, 1997. WHERE: - Start: 7:30 a.m. at Molokai Ranch's Hale O Lono Harbor, Moloka`i, across the Kaiwi (Moloka`) channel to a finish at the Hilton Hawaiian Village, Waikiki. First finishers are expected between 1:00 - 1:30 p.m. WHO: - Approximately 55 crews from Australia, Hawai`i, New Zealand, Tahiti, Canada and the Mainland are expected to compete.
HOW: - Open division koa and fiberglass teams have 10 paddlers with six in the canoe at one time. Masters teams have 12 paddlers. Paddlers rotate open ocean changes as the race progresses across the channel while the canoe is in motion. Changes are scheduled strategically by individual coaches. Each canoe must have one escort boat with a race official in it. Divisions include koa, fiberglass and masters. DEFENDING CHAMPIONS: - OffShore Outrigger Canoe Club of California has won the race ten times. Their 1996 finish time was 6:46.33. RECORD: 1995, OffShore Outrigger Canoe Club: 5 hours, 24 minutes, 32 seconds. The first seven teams finishing in 1995 broke the old 1990 record of 5:44.
