SUNNY THE ENERGIZER BUNNY: 1992
Sunny Garcia has known good times and bad at Pipeline. In 1992, he saw the dark side, as Pipeline twice sent him to the hospital. Garcia began the Triple Crown with a win at the Wyland Galleries Hawaiian Pro. At Pipeline, he injured his elbow in an early-round heat and ended up in the hospital. Still, he advanced to the final. In the final, Garcia was leading Liam McNamara, Kelly Slater and Barton Lynch when he was slammed to the bottom by a Backdoor thumper and came to the beach asking, "What heat is it?" He was rushed to the hospital for the second time, then hitchhiked back to the beach before the final was over. He placed second to Slater, and ended up winning the Triple Crown. Photo: Jeff Divine.
