Event: The 8th annual Op Junior Surfing Championship, now in its second year in Hawai`i, is the only junior contest in the G-Shock Triple Crown of Surfing.
Where: Alii Beach Park, Haleiwa When: Holding period - November 15 through November 23, 1997. The OP Junior heats will be on the first weekend of the competition, surf permitting and will be determined by the contest director. Daily start time:8 am. 1996 Winner: Dan Malloy, Ventura, Calif. won the 1996 OP Junior contest. Past Winners: Kelly Slater, 1989; Danny Melhado, 1990; Rob Machado, 1991; Tim Buehler, 1992; Chris Strother; 1993; Kalani Robb, 1994; Tim Curran, 1995; Dan Malloy, 1996. Surfers: 32 invited surfers age 18 and under, who have qualified primarily via amateur association rankings and representing the top juniors from around the United States, will compete. Prize Money: $2,500 in Scholarships. Awards: An awards ceremony will be held on-stage at Alii Beach Park immediately following the finals. A press conference will be held on-site immediately following the awards.
Press Facility: The Op Pro press facility will be open at Alii Beach Park
on surfing days in the same location as the Op Pro Men's Division, from 8:00 a.m. to the end of each day's competition..
