FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Honolulu Hawai`i (July 12, 1999) - The tiny Vapor from Long Beach and Sweet Caroline from Australia remained out of radio touch. Both were believed to be having radio problems - Bill Boyd and Scott Atwood's Vapor since it started two weeks ago and William Rawson's Sweet Caroline because of dead batteries after its engine broke down.
Estimates based on the speed potential of Vapor, a B-25, were that it wasn't
expected to reach Honolulu until Tuesday night or Wednesday. No satellite distress signals had been heard, so race officials remained confident it would show up unannounced.
Three ULDB 70s followed the other Doublehanded entry, Two Guys on the Edge,
into Waikiki late Sunday night. Steve Popovich's Cheval from San Pedro, Bob
Lane's Medicine Man, Long Beach, and Robert Saielli's Mongoose , San Diego, finished in that order.
Medicine Man lost three spinnakers in the last few days. The first two blew apart while flogging after gear failures. The third ripped during a jibe.
Photos, e-mail from boats, daily progress and position reports, charts,
crew lists and other information are available on the race web page.
